Teams Prepare for Winter
The men's and women's team are currently training with Head Coach Michael Leblanc in preparation for the upcoming season. For a one and a half hours each afternoon, our athletes work on their endurance, stamina, and agility with Coach Leblanc at Brown's athletic complex.
The McConnell Division has undergone some changes so be sure to check out this year's schedule. The league will now primarily compete in Vermont. Jan Camp will also likely be held in Vermont. Stay tuned for updates from the season.

President Simmons Recommends to Save Skiing
In an email to the Brown community yesterday, President Simmons released her recommendations with regard to the proposed changes for the Athletics Department. She has decided not to cut Brown Skiing.
Last spring, the Athletic Review Committee recommended that Brown Skiing be cut in an effort to bring the Department more in line with the mission of Brown University. While the initial recommendation to cut teams was championed as a decision free of economic influences, this turned out to be far from the case. President Simmons informed Team members in mid-September that endowment size would be a contributing factor in her decision.
Since then, the Team and Friends of Brown Skiing have embarked on an intensive fundraising campaign. We are delighted to report today that we have received nearly $150,000 in pledged support for the Men's and Women's teams. We will continue our fundraising efforts over the coming months and ask for your help. If you have already pledged money, please contact the Brown Sports Foundation and donate your pledged amount today!
President Simmons' recommendations also put forth fundraising targets for each team to meet. She would like each athletic program to have an endowment that covers 100% of operating costs. For Brown Skiing, this equates to a $2 million endowment. So we need your help! Please use the form below to donate to Brown Skiing. If you would like to become more actively involved in the Friends of Brown Skiing organization, please contact Mike LeBlanc at michael_leblanc@brown.edu.

President Simmons Postpones A Final Decision
Today, the Athletic Review Committee issued an addendum to its preliminary recommendations after discussions and feedback from current team members, students, parents, and alumni. The addendum requests that the issue be postponed until Fall 2011 in order to allow students to focus on their final examinations. Deliberations will continue until the committee's final recommendations are released in three weeks. The issue will then be taken up at the October meeting of Brown's Corporation.
While this decision guarantees that the team will have a 2011-2012 season, our future is still in question! So we need your help! Please continue to write to the committee to let them know how much Brown Skiing means to you! We also need donations! Please go to Friends of Brown Skiing and pledge your support so that we can ensure the Brown Ski Team will be here for years to come!

Save Brown Skiing!
It is with the most unfortunate news that I write this blog post. As many of you have learned over the past 48 hours, the Athletics Review Committee commissioned by President Ruth Simmons has released a report recommending that the Women's and Men's Ski Teams be cut along with 3 other varsity teams to make way for a 10% budget increase and the elevation of a women's club team to varsity status within the next year. The committee's full recommendations can be found here:

Our head coach Mike LeBlanc, current athletes, and alumni are in the process of writing to members of the committee, Ruth Simmons, and other University officials. Next week, we will begin an appeals process with the hope of reversing these misguided recommendations.
